The picture above shows the flag in its proposed location.
A Faculty has been applied for to relocate the Union flag to the south west corner at the back of church and to move the Roll of Honour to the adjacent wall. A Faculty is required as St John's is a Grade 2 listed building. The flag was previously in the Chancel, relocating it removes it from the line of sight of the congregation during worship and when going to the altar rail to receive communion. The Lord's table is open to all baptised believers admitted to communion irrespective of nationality. The flag is treated with respect and will be properly mounted rather than leant against the wall. The explanation submitted as part of the Faculty application can be found here
The formal application is to mount the (existing) union parade flag on the wall at the west end of the church using handmade oak fittings based on the design of the churchwarden’s wand fittings. These will be made by a member of the congregation and wood turner, at no cost to the PCC. The fittings will be screwed to the wall, one to keep the flag base off the ground and one further up to hold it in place, but allow easy removal for use.
The Roll of Honour will be moved from the narthex to the east-west wall adjacent to the flag.
